Wanna super easy way to make your site more personal and memorable? Change your favicon (aka: the little icon in your browser address field). Here’s how…

The Favicon, is the little picture that appears next to the website address in your browser (and also on the website tabs for browsers that support tabbed browsing), and in the bookmarks when your site is bookmarked.

It’s these little things that help your website stand out, create your own branding, and help your visitors remember your site. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Create your icon. I used Photoshop to create mine, but i suspect most image editors will do the trick. Just take the image you want to use, make sure its square (same size on all sides), and then reduce it to 16×16 pixels. Save it using the .ico file extension (i.e. myimage.ico, I saved mine as “ty.ico”).
    If you don’t feel comfortable creating your own, or don’t have the time, do a Google search for free favicon generator and you’ll find a bunch of free resources to make it automatically online for free.
  2. Upload your new icon image to your web server. I saved mine to the “images” folder of my root web (i.e. “www.tysblog.com/images/ty.ico”
  3. Insert the code below (text in green) into the “head” section of you index page (between <head> and </head&gt;). Wordpress users insert it into the Header.php file - go to “presentation/Theme Editor, and select “Header” from the right. You can place the code just under your “Title” tag.

    <link rel=”shortcut icon” type=”image/ico” href=”http://www.YOURSITE.com/images/ty.ico”>

    (remember to change the URL to your own and make sure the path to the icon file is correct in the code if you saved your icon to a directory other than “www.yoursite.com/images”)

If you want to make your favicon stand out a little bit more you can go here: http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/ to add text and animate your icon (although the icon will not show up someone’s favorites/bookmarks if they add your site if you do use an animated icon - just FYI).

UPDATE: If you are using wordpress I just found a FREE plugin that will help you create and install a favicon. I haven’t used it yet but from what I saw at the publisher’s page it couldn’t be easier. CLICK HERE to visit their site.

That’s it! Enjoy…
