Note: This article only pertains to users of the wordpress blogging solution. If you’re using something like Blogger.com, etc., this may not be of much help to you - sorry. Could still be an interesting read though, and will most likely give you something to think about for your blog/website…
So, I’m driving home and as is my obsession lately, I was thinking about ways to monetize this blog. Since I was in the car a computer wasn’t at hand, thus I was browsing the net and checking out blogs on my cell phone (don’t worry, I was the passenger). I very quickly noticed something; almost none of the blogs I happened by looked good, and even less seemed to have advertising displaying correctly (if at all).
Now I’m not really complaining about not seeing ads, but, just what if one of the sites I happened by offered a product or service I was actually interested in, could use, just HAD to have right there and then? What a waste of resources and a potential chance for these blog owners to capitalize on my potential impulse purchase (I do this more often than I’d like to admit). I mean seriously, here I am taking the time to check out their sites and there’s pretty much no way they’re going to profit from me. And all for the soul reason - I’m on my cell phone… Hmm…
I had about an hour and a half drive ahead of me and couldn’t wait to see if this was an obstacle I could overcome with this blog. After all, I know the only way to really turn a healthy profit with a blog is to capitalize in every possible way you can. So without a second thought I pulled out my laptop, plugged it into my cell to tap into the net, and began my search (and yes I know, I could’ve just been using my laptop in the first place but that really isn’t the point here…).
As luck would have it, my search was much easier than I thought it would be and after a brief stint at the wordpress.com plugin page I found the answer. It’s called “Mowser“.
To quote the wordpress plugin page description of mowser: “Mowser (http://mowser.com) includes a service that allows publishers to display their existing web content to users on mobile phones and other handheld devices. This plugin detects when a user is on a mobile phone and automatically redirects them to the Mowser optimized version of the page they were trying to access.”
Since Mowser is ad supported, whenever someone uses it, the first page they land on on the way to the URL they entered is of course, an ad. This ad is generally provided by the folks at admob.com. And yup, you guessed it, just like adsense and all the other contextual ad providers, sign up at admob.com and you get a cut of the ad revenue you generate!
Best of all, the Mowser plugin has a nifty feature that lets you simply enter your admob “site ID” to track your referrals so there’s no code to enter into your blog what so ever. It couldn’t be easier.
I have since installed Mowser on this blog and am happy so far. I took a look at this blog with, and without it, and have to say it is better viewed with the plugin installed, althoug I do have to admit both leave a little something to be desired.
But when all is said and done, I spent more time writing this article than I did setting up my admob.com account and installing & setting up the Mowser plugin so I guess it was worth the time. At least I’m offering a slightly better version of my blog for any potential mobile users and doing what I can to monetize their visits… And at the end of the day, that’s what its all about - provide a good end user experience while making the most money you possibly can.
Like this blog? Sweet! Wanna help a guy out & buy me a cup of coffee? If you liked this post,do me a favor and

Hey Ty, happy you like the plugin and Mowser! As far as the look of the adapted version, I’ve actually been working on some mobile stylesheets to make the different wordpress themes look better:

Mowser allows you to swap in whatever mobile CSS you want, but I’ve been trying to make some canned ones that folks can use with the popular themes. I do have a public version for cutline, the theme you seem to be using here.
Give it a try, maybe you’ll like the mobile display better with it swapped in. And if you want to make customizations you can always take my starting CSS, download it and make changes, and point the Mowser plugin to that alternate version.
Good luck with your mobile experiments, hope it turns out well!

Thanks Mike. If not for a lack of time, um, at the time, I would of mentioned the CSS addition. I do have to admit I lack in the requisites to do much in CSS modifications, but I will experiment with it at some point soon and am sure I’ll be pleased.
Thanks for a great plugin!
Ty
