How To: Capture whatever is on your screen with no special software
A reader asked for my help and I needed to see what was on his screen so I asked him to email me a screen shot. He then replied that he didn’t have a “screen capture utility” and asked what which one I might suggest he use.
WHAT?!? There are companies that charge for this?!?!? No, No , NO… Here’s how to do it yourself, with no special programs, in like 5 seconds flat…
- Hit your function key (usually Fn somewhere on the bottom row + “PrtScr” or “PrntScrn” (depends on your keyboard - usually F12 or F11 key) at the same time = “Fn+PrtScr”
- Go to your Start bar, then Accessories, and open “Paint” (or whatever image editing program you want)
- Go to Edit, then Paste (or just hit “Ctrl+V”, this is the shortcut for the paste command).
Note: If you’re using something other than Paint, and the image doesn’t just appear you may need to open a “New” image and then paste - that’s how Photoshop works at least. But hit “Ctrl+V” first and then Photoshop will open the correct sized image when you open “New” - just makes things a bit easier…
And just FYI: These directions are for Windows… ![]()
