Wordpress announces version 2.5.1 today
Today wordpress made version 2.5.1 available for download and according to their blog, it’s an important release. This new version apparently addresses several issues that came along with the not even month old version 2.5 including a security vulnerability.
According to the Wordpress.org blog you are most at risk of this new security vulnerability if you allow open registration on your blog. The exact details aren’t being made public at this time but will be shortly.
From the horse’s mouth:
In addition to the security fix, 2.5.1 contains many bug fixes. If you are interested only in the security fixes, you can download these corrected copies of wp-includes/pluggable.php, wp-admin/includes/media.php, and wp-admin/media.php. Replace your existing copies of these files with these new copies.
If you download the entire 2.5.1 release, you will be getting over 70 other fixes. 2.5.1 focuses on fixing the most annoying bugs and improving performance. Here are some highlights:
- Performance improvements for the Dashboard, Write Post, and Edit Comments pages.
- Better performance for those who have many categories
- Media Uploader fixes
- An upgrade to TinyMCE 3.0.7
- Widget Administration fixes
- Various usability improvements
- Layout fixes for IE
If you’ve already upgraded to v. 2.5 you will likely want to upgrade to 2.5.1 before the security vulnerability is made public.
Ty’s tip:
To make the whole process of upgrading a LOT easier you may want to use the WP Automatic Upgrade plugin. I used it for the upgrade to 2.5 and 2.5.1 and found it’s quite easy to use. One suggestion I have is to disable all your of plugins manually (except the Auto Upgrade plugin, of course) before executing the upgrade process. I had some issues with the upgrade to 2.5 when I allowed the Auto Upgrade plugin to handle disabling and then enabling the plugins, although I had no issues when I handled that part myself during this last upgrade.
Hopefully it’ll be a while before their next release… I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Well when 2.5 came out I wrote a pretty have negative review, and then comment section exploded with the people who agreed for the most part. But I predicted we’d see a 2.5.1 before the month was out. The bugs were just too extensive.

All these releases are making me dizzy. I just published a manual WordPress upgrade guide on my site, if anyone doesn’t feel “comfortable” using the auto-upgrade plugin.
