More traffic - no more work!
So, do you have a few old posts that are just awesome? Posts that are buried in your archives and haven’t seen the light of day in months or even years? Well if you’re a Worpress user there’s a simple way to recycle these post and bring a little traffic to them with one simple action.
First you have to be publishing your posts in a manner that allows you to change the URL of the post. I.e.: “http://www.tysblog.com/2008/07/02/recycle-your-old-posts” or similar. If you’re using the default URL method, i.e.: “http://www.tysblog.com/?p=92″, you’re outta luck. If you are using the default URL method I would HIGHLY suggest you change it to a date and name format (this is easy to do in the wordpress dashboard under settings, and then permalinks). This format is WAY more SEO friendly.
Because wordpress is a database driven publishing solution once a post is published the URL is recorded for that particular post and will always direct people to that post EVEN IF YOU CHANGE THE URL! You can probably see where I’m going with this…
So, if you’re looking for a quick way to boost your traffic, go back to an old post (make sure it’s a GOOD one), change it’s URL and then have some of your friends stumble it. Since it will be a new URL stumble will look at it as if it’s a new post and any links you have pointing to the old URL will still direct traffic the that post. You’ll in effect have to URL’s pointing to the same post!
I would suggest you do this rarely, as you don’t want to regurgitate your posts all the time but it is a great way to get some new sets of eyes on your finer blog posts and increase your readership.

You mean changing the slug? That’s a good idea. But I wonder how SU will look upon that.

Well, I did it with my useful tools page, and it generated about 1000 hit in about 24 hours. I just wouldn’t do it too often, and only on worthy posts/pages…
